Description / 1858 1C Flying Eagle / Laurel Wreath cent J-191a PCGS PR65+ (PHOTO SEAL & CAC)
Gem Proof (14: 4,5,5). Snow-PT14. The transitional die pair with the 5-leaf laurel wreath similar to the adopted issue in 1859. This is the finest example graded by PCGS. This is part of the popular 12-piece pattern cent set sold by the mint in 1858 and for a few years afterwards. The set includes the regular issue 1858 Small Letter Flying Eagle cent. The coins with the large Flying Eagle obverse with the Small Letters are the toughest and most popular of the set. This is because some collectors get them as a representative for the Proof Flying Eagle cent for their type set. The laurel wreath reverse make it even more attractive to type collectors. There are also collectors who desire the transitional issues only.
The coin is a full cameo on the obverse and the reverse is slightly less mirrored. It is a very impressive example and would be a treasure in any set it ends up in.
