Description / 1858 1C Large Letters Low Leaves Snow-6 Flying Eagle Cent NGC MS64 (PHOTO SEAL & CAC)

Choice Unc (14: 4,5,5). A super fully struck example of this scarce die combination. This is also a bold doubled die obverse variety - Snow-6. Check out the UNITED and the Eagle's eye. This is the finest known example. There are only three examples traced. The design combination is scarce because the design of the obverse and reverse was changed mid-year. The reverse in 1857 and early 1858 is the High Leaves reverse. It is a high relief design. In order to save on die usage, the Mint switched to the lower relief Small Letter obverse design and the low relief Low Leaves reverse design. The Mint continued to use dies until they broke or wore out. A full set of designs really need to have all four die combinations:

Large Letter/High Leaves (common)

Large Letter/Low Leaves (scarce)

Small Letters/High Leaves (scarce)

Small Letters/Low Leaves (common)
