1858/7 1C (Strong) Snow-1 Flying Eagle Cent NGC MS64 (CAC, PHOTO SEAL)

Choice Unc (14: 5,5,4). FS-301. Light brown tone. This is an outstanding example with very few marks. The overdate is extremely bold. There is no mistaking the overdate here. There is slight weakness on the right of both sides, due to the dies being skewed. Nearly all example show this weakness. This example is better struck than many others. There is a triangle-shaped dot above the first 8 in the date. This is a misplaced digit. It is the edge of a 1-digit. It is unmistakable on this example as this is the earliest die state known. This is in an old fat-style holder which was graded back in the early 1990's.

When evaluating this issue, you must take into account the boldness of the 7 under-digit as well as the strike. Examples with the 7 missing or just barely visible (whether graded with a STRONG designation or not) are not as valuable as example with a bold 7, such as this piece. The addition of the STRONG qualifier on certified holders is a recent qualification, and if used back in the 1990's, this would have surely gotten that designation. The strike, if mostly full is also better than a weakly struck piece. This example is in the top quarter in terms of strike. The grade will tell you how many marks are present and this is important as well. This example is accurately graded by NGC. There is some surface debris in the fields, as expected for a totally original coin. It is far better than most examples seen.
